Tips + Tricks

No. 1 --> Don't overcrowd the air fryer. It may be tempting to shove as many potatoes in the air fryer basket as you can fit, but it's not always the best way! For optimal results, you must leave some space between the potatoes.

No. 2 --> After giving the potatoes a good wash, ensure they are as dry as possible before rubbing with oil. A fully dried skin will crisp better than a damp one!

No. 3 --> Try to choose potatoes of similar size and weight. This will ensure a more even cook time and end results.

No. 4 --> If unsure of the doneness on your baked potatoes you can easily test them with a food thermometer. The finished temperature is right around 205f.

Key Ingredients

  • Potatoes: Choose firm, starchy potatoes with no bruises or sprouts. I love russet potatoes for baked potatoes, but Yukon gold will also work. PSST. This recipe also works for sweet potatoes!
  • Oil: A mild/ neutral-flavoured oil with a high smoke point is desirable for this recipe. Canola oil, grapeseed oil, even avocado oil will work. If the oil doesn't have a high enough smoke point (ie. over 400f) it can leave a bitter, acrid flavor in your food, and stink up the house! I would avoid olive oil, if possible.
  • Coarse kosher salt: Salt is necessary to enhance the mild flavor of potatoes. I prefer coarse kosher salt, or sea salt as it's harder to over-salt with larger salt crystals.

How To Make Air Fryer Baked Potatoes

  1. Preheat air fryer to 400f.
  2. Meanwhile, wash and dry the potatoes thoroughly. I like to scrub my potatoes with a dish brush to loosen any dirt or debris.
  3. Drizzle oil over the potatoes and rub between your hands to distribute the oil over the entire skin of the potato.
  4. Sprinkle the top of each potato with coarse kosher salt to taste.
  5. Add prepared potatoes to the basket of the preheated air fryer and cook at 400f for 30-50 minutes (this time greatly depends on the size of the potato.) The potatoes are done when they pierce easily with a fork, squish with tongs or reach an internal temperature between 204 and 207f,
  6. Carefully remove the baked potatoes from the air fryer, I used silicone baking gloves.
  7. Place the potatoes on a cutting board and slit open the skin from end to end lengthwise, then squeeze the potato together by then ends.
  8. Serve hot with your favorite toppings!

Storage:

If you've got leftover baked potatoes, allow them to cool to room temperature before storing in the fridge in an airtight container. To reheat, pop the potato back in the air fryer at 400f for a few minutes, or until heated through.
