Baking Essentials
Banneton Baskets
For sourdough lovers, a good proofing basket is key to achieving that artisan bakery look. These baskets support your dough during its final rise, helping develop a beautiful crust pattern. Plus, they’re easy to maintain and add that rustic touch that sourdough enthusiasts love.
Stand Mixer
I splurged on an Ankarsrum stand mixer a couple of years ago, and I am SO happy that I did. This machine of mine takes a beating and never skips a beat. The build quality and endurance is much higher than my KitchenAid mixer.
Scale
I spent a long time bucking the idea of a scale, but one I got into sourdough and really used to baking with a scale, I absolutely prefer it! I recommend one that takes AA vs button style batteries, you’ll go through way less batteries.
Dutch Oven
Cast iron dutch ovens are such a versatile addition to anyone’s kitchen. Their unmatched heat retention and distribution make them incredibly good at braising meats, baking casseroles, and even baking sourdough. Opt for high quality, heavy options, but you don’t need to be woo’d by brand names. A $100 dollar option will work just as good as a $400 dollar version.
Food Preservation Essentials
Dehydrator
I am a proud dehydrating junkie! We have two 9 tray Excalibur dehydrators and they pretty much run from July to November as the crops come out on our homestead. They are invaluable for increasing shelf life and storage options for fruits, vegetables, herbs, and more.
Mason Jars
Mason jars are a fantastic addition to any cook’s kitchen, especially if you live in an ingredient household, like us!
Mason jars make it possible to store things like jams, salsas, and pickles long term, at room temperature. They’re perfect vessels for fermenting and infusing. They are able to store liquids, solids, and powders in an airtight container. They’re easily sterilized and infinitely reusable, and offered in many sizes.
Fermenting Supplies
If you haven’t been bitten by the fermenting bug, I hope you do soon!
While fermenting foods is a really accessible, inexpensive hobby, there are a few tools and supplies I use that make the process easier. I love my glass Pickle Pebbles from Mason Tops – they help to keep all my ingredients submerged to prevent spoilage. My Easy Fermenter Lids allow me to extract as much oxygen as possible, again to ensure no contamination and spoilage.
