Writing On Sourdough
Create stunning sourdough with this simple technique for writing on and decorating your loaves. Learn to add personalized messages, names, or designs that bake into beautiful golden patterns.

I posted this quick reel on Instagram as a really fun way to “write” on your loaves, and thought I’d add the steps here for anyone who doesn’t follow me on Instagram!
The process is SUPER easy. For this loaf, I used my pumpkin sourdough bread recipe, except I omitted the swirl and the cranberries, and added the spices when I added the flour. I dusted the dough with black cocoa powder to make a black and orange theme, but you can use bread flour or rice flour for a white backdrop – I prefer bread flour.
- Prepare your desired sourdough bread recipe and once fully proved in the banneton, you’re ready to start. Place a length of butcher’s twine into a small bowl and cover with warm water. Set aside.
- Invert the banneton onto a piece of parchment paper. Spritz the surface of the sourdough loaf with water and rub to ensure even coverage.
- Remove the twine from the bowl and squeeze out any excess water. Use the the twine to write in cursive letters on your dough. Lightly spritz the loaf with water again.
- Using a small sieve, dust the loaf with flour before carefully removing the twine.
- Score and bake as per the recipe.
