How To: Traeger Pizza Oven Hack

Learn how we modified a Green Mountain Grills (GMG) pizza oven to fit our Traeger so that we could have wood-fired pizza too! This easy hack is a game-changer for making homemade smoked pizza.

“You guys have to come over! I got a pizza oven for my smoker!” our friend chattered excitedly on speakerphone.

Kevy and I exchanged familar “start the carrrr” glances.

After a night of incredible pizza, laughs, friendship and MORE incredible pizza, (I mean, I ate so much pizza I hated myself after), we knew we needed our own pizza oven.

You might be asking yourself “does Traeger have a pizza oven?” No. There’s NO Traeger pizza oven attachment. There is a Traeger pizza grill kit, but it comes with a pizza stone, cutter, and spatula. But it’s no pizza OVEN!

Have no fear! We’ve modified ours to fit, and it’s ahhhmazing.

This tutorial is dedicated to darn good pizza on the Traeger.

Why buy a pizza oven attachment for your pellet grill?

Sure you could throw a pizza stone on the ole grill and call it good, and that gives good pizza. But a pizza oven gives amazing pizza. This attachment funnels heat from the firebox into the steel pizza oven, using the venturi effect, magic, and some other science I don’t pretend to understand, allowing you to achieve temperatures of 650-800f within your smoker. These temps cook a pizza in 2-4 minutes. That coupled with FRESH, homemade pizza dough will literally change your life. Literally.

Recommended tools:

After you’ve got your oven fabbed up and you’re ready to get to pizza making, there are a few things you’ll need.

Pizza peel – This one is non negotiable. There’s no way you’ll get your hand or a plastic flipper anywhere near that pizza oven when the fire is roaring, plus you need something to transport that fresh made pizza from the kitchen to the grill. Grab yourself a pizza peel. Mine has a wooden handle, lightweight aluminum paddle and is 14″.

Cornmeal – Cornmeal is an important part of pizza making, a generous sprinkle on the pizza peel acts as a releasing agent for the pizza. It gives you more time before the dough sticks to your peel. As an added bonus, you can use cornmeal to make my delicious cornbread!

Pizza cutter – We’ve got an old school pizza wheel and it works great, but if I were to replace it today, I’d get a rocking pizza cutter.

  • Green Mountain Grill Pizza Oven

Instructions

  • Get your hands on one of those amazing Green Mountain Grill Pizza Ovens.
  • Grab a friend, this job is a little easier with help.
  • Remove ALL the racks, grease trays, and firebox cover. Place the pizza oven into your Traeger to ensure it fits. Our Timberline fit the pizza oven perfect, BUT the front tabs had to be removed as they wouldn’t allow the lid to close completely.
  • Remove your pizza oven from the smoker.
  • Place the pizza oven right side up with the firebox extension sleeve on the potholder – we don’t want to damage the sleeve. We decided to do our work on the floor.

  • Put on PPE. Welding gloves, safety glasses etc. Protect yourself from flying sparks!
  • Using your angle grinder or hacksaw, cut the front two tabs from the front of the pizza oven, as close to the front plate as possible, without damaging the frame.

  • Once the bulk of the front tabs are removed, use your flat file to file any metal burs and to file the remainder of the front tabs until they are flat.

  • Use the sandpaper to smooth the tabs. This will ensure there are no barbs or sharp spots to cut yourself on.

  1. Did you have to set your traeger at a higher temperature to achieve the desired stone temps? We used the guide from the booklet, but even setting the grill to 375, we couldn’t get stone temps higher than 480 after 2 hours with the grill lid closed. I know the green mountain grills have heat shields, so I wonder if their augers burn hotter.

    1. Hi L & W,
we played around with the temperature a bit the first few times we used the pizza oven and found the ideal temperature for us was right around 400f. We do have a new Timberline, with the D2 controller, so if you’ve got the other controller, this may need to be tweaked a bit!

    2. @Ally, how long did it take to preheat the oven with the grill at 400? Also, is the oven in direct contact with the grills firebox? Or is there space in between?

      1. There is a telescopic sleeve on the pizza oven that slides down into the firebox! Mine takes a while, at least 45 minutes- but my buddy’s pizza oven on a GMG grill takes the same length of time!

  2. What temperature did you set your traeger at? I tried setting mine at 350 and it didn’t get hot enough to preheat the pizza stone. The GM pizza oven manual says not to set above 430. Not sure if that was just for green mountain grills

  3. Thank you for this hack! It works incredibly well and we absolutely love the pizza it makes!!

Out of curiosity, have you found a cover for the pizza oven insert? Not sure how to store it, but seemingly in a cover to protect from the outdoor elements would be good.

    Thanks!

    1. I haven’t found a great cover. Not gonna lie, I’m a box keeper, so mine just goes back into the box and on the shelf in the garage!

  4. How stable is the pizza oven in a Timberline without the front two two tabs? Was thinking those were to secure oven in GM pellet grill. Does it wobble at all?

    1. @Ally, Ended up simply bending down the front two tabs. Took 2 minutes and if done right helps secure pizza oven in place.

  5. Hooray! I have a Traeger Pro 34 and a Pro 22. The GM pizza oven fit perfectly on the 22 without removing the tabs. I’m keeping the 22 set up as a pizza oven. I love it! We played around with different pellets and found that we liked the mesquite best. It tasted most like the wood-fired pizza we enjoy. I was able to get my stone up to 780 degrees – too hot! We played around with it and had great results. I’m so glad I found this hack. Thanks for posting!

    1. @Kristin, is the model you got have the circle or square bottom. There seems to be a few models with same parts code.

    2. @Kristin,
What temp did you have to set the Traeger to get the stone that warm. Been setting mine at 450 and still not getting that hot even after an hour or so of preheat?

  6. I bought the Green Mountain pizza attachment for my Traeger Iron wood 650 and it fit perfectly with my grill with no needed adjustments. It was if it was designed specifically for a Traeger. It works great.

  7. I have wanted to get this and try it. Love your hack. I have the Costco version of the Traeger Tailgater. The measurements inside 18x15x9.5 with the firebox still in. The lid does not open all the way, but the pizza oven looks like it slants and may be low enough to put it in. I don’t think I would put the handle on the lid, but just put a bolt in its place to keep the hole sealed. This would reduce the height requirements. I can find no written dimensions for this grill. It looks like you are able to find out which grills this oven can be used in. Can you help me figure out if mine will be able to use the GMPO. I sure hope so. Looks like a great option. And not expensive either. Thanks for your help.

    1. Hey Catz,

The tailgater is a small unit – I’m not sure one would fit in there. Even with the handle removed from the lid. My sister has a tailgater in her RV, once summer hits here in Canada, I will test it for you and get back to you!
