I was strolling around the internet a while ago and found some really interesting ideas in regards to homemade lunch snacks for the kids! I’m always looking for ways to better their health without taking the excitement of treats away.
I’ve never considered the idea of homemade chewy candies before. But the idea is simple, heat up some healthy juice, add some gelatin, chill in a mold and enjoy!
Trust me, the kids enjoyed!
I did two small batches, which turned out perfectly, as one batch filled my molds perfectly. I also chose two different kinds of pomegranate juice, just to keep things interesting for the kids.
I used Pom Peach White Tea for the robots, and the Blueberry Pom Juice for the dinosaurs. Because the juice I used was sweetened, I didn’t need to add any maple syrup or honey. If your juice is unsweetened (just taste it, you’ll know) you may needto add 1-2 tbsp honey or maple syrup – depending on the desired taste and tartness of your juice. Here’s where I got the molds! Looks like they come in a set in the States, you lucky ducks!
We used Great Lakes Bovine Gelatin. On the surface Great Lakes gelatin looks a lot more expensive than the stuff you can buy in the grocery store, but when compared to the benefits, it’s a no brainer. This gelatin can help bone and joint health, as well as gut health. It’s a nearly complete protein that helps the body digest food as it binds to water and helps food through the digestive tract. Gelatin also supports skin, nail, hair and muscle growth. It’s a wonderful easy to consume protein that has benefits in the body nearly everywhere you look.

“Gelatin is largely composed of the amino acids glycine and proline, which many people don’t consume in adequate amounts as they are found in the bones, fibrous tissues and organs of animals and as a population, we don’t consume these parts as much anymore. These amino acids are needed not only for proper skin, hair and nail growth, but for optimal immune function and weight regulation!
Glycine, which makes up about 1/3 of the amino acids in gelatin powder is anti-inflammatory and evidence is finding that it can help speed wound healing. Glycine in gelatin can also help improve sleep ease and quality.”
So go forth and set some gelatin!
Healthy Homemade Fruit Snacks
- ¾ cup juice
- 1/8 cup unflavoured gelatin
- 1-2 tbsp honey or maple syrup – If juice is unsweetened only
- Prep by placing a small cutting board under the gelatin mold.
- In a medium sized sauce-pan, heat juice over medium- low heat until warm. If using, whisk in honey/ syrup until combined.
- Once the juice is warm to the touch, but not hot, sprinkle the gelatin over the juice and whisk in well.
- Slowly pour the gelatin juice mixture into silicone mold.
- Carefully carry the mold over to the fridge and let set for 30 minutes to an hour before removing from molds.
- Store in an airtight container in the fridge!
