OCTOBER 2019 UPDATE: You can get the same dry powder spray bottle as I have! BEST DAY EVER!
A quite a few years ago I came across dry shampoo in the store. I had never used it but thought it was intriguing, so I grabbed a bottle of it.
Turns out, I absolutely loved the stuff.
It was great for adding a little bit of lift and volume to my roots, great for holding in a solid backcomb, and great for making my hair look first day fresh just *one* more day!
There are some days, where I accidentally sleep in and wake up with less time than I'd like before rushing off to bring the kids to school and hustling off to work. Those are generally the days I wake up feeling and looking, a little less than fresh. AH! I know. This is when my dry shampoo really steps up!
While I LOVED the store-bought stuff, I just didn't like the ingredient list. Or the fact that they were single-use aerosol cans. Or the strong scent. Or how much it made me cough when I used it indoors.
In my bid to be healthier and more environmentally conscious, I mostly gave up dry shampoo.
Then one day, I was at my local health food store and they had a little bottle of dry shampoo sitting on the counter. It wasn't filled with toxic, hard to pronounce ingredients. It wasn't an aerosol propelled spray bottle. It was perfect!
Till I saw the price. $30! I choked back my shock and bought it. Used it. Loved it.
Until I ran out. That's when I decided I needed to make my own.
I hope you love my dry shampoo as much as I do! It's easy to pat a little bit along my roots for a quick freshen up, or give my head a good spritz with the spray shampoo followed by a quick blow-dry to help sort out the "I just slept this hair" kinks.
HOW TO MAKE SPRAY DRY SHAMPOO AT HOME!
Gather your ingredients:
HOW TO USE SPRAY DRY SHAMPOO:
OCTOBER 2019 UPDATE: you can get the same dry powder spray bottle as I have!
If using the dry powder spray bottle:
- fill a dry spray bottle with powder
- shake well
- spray into roots
- brush through hair
- have a great hair day!
If using the brush method:
- dip a large makeup brush in the dry shampoo mix
- tap off excess back into the container
- tap again in the lid
- gently pat the mixture into your roots where required, massage a bit using fingertips
- wait a few minutes, then brush hair thoroughly until well blended.
- have a great hair day!
HOW LONG DOES THE BATCH OF DRY SHAMPOO LAST:
It is now October 2019, and I have been using this dry shampoo since October of 2016 - and there is still some left in my flip jar! It lasts FOREVER! And I still use it at least once a week!
To make the spray wet-dry shampoo:
* While this spray wet-dry shampoo worked well, I found it had the tendency to clog the bottom of the sprayer over time. For that reason, I prefer the spray dry shampoo above.
Gather ingredients
- 2 tbsp tapioca starch
- 2 tbsp vodka
- 2 tbsp witch hazel
- cocoa - if required
- 10-15 drops of essential oils - if desired
Using a narrow funnel, fill a small spray bottle with ingredients, starting with the starch. Once all ingredients are in the bottle, shake well to combine.
To use:
- shake well before use
- part hair and spritz along the roots
- work it into the roots with your fingers
- hit it with the blow-dryer to help speed up the drying process and to add a little volume
NOTES:
* No need to spray lots of this one - it packs a punch but just doesn't seem so when wet
* Spray before you get dressed as it may leave a little bit of powder residue behind
* While this spray wet-dry shampoo worked well, I found it had the tendency to clog the bottom of the sprayer over time. For that reason, I prefer the spray dry shampoo.

Hi Ally! I have made the dry shampoo spray and I love it!!! But...I do have an issue with the mixture or my spray bottle. Not sure. Mine keeps clogging up my spray bottle nozzles and they won't work after just a few sprays. Rinsing them does no good either. Do you have a favorite spray bottle/nozzle that you recommend? Thanks!
Ally says
Hey Beth, I noticed a bit of that with mine too - I found like cheap spray bottles with the variable nozzle actually worked the best! I'm glad to hear you love it - I do too!

Just tried the powder and love it! I couldn’t find the clay at my local store, but with the cocoa powder, tapioca starch and corn starch, it works wonderfully! Like you, I’m not thrilled with the ingredients of a regular dry shampoo so I’m really happy I have this (way better) option now! Thanks, Ally!

You're so welcome, thanks for the review!

Hello Ally - great TO find your recipe for dry shampoo. Years ago, when dry shampoo first came on the Market (the 60’s or 70’s) i tried it. It was a moderate stop gap but left my dark auburn Hair with a dull look. Now my hair is gray and I am wondering how the
Cocoa piwder will work with the gray colour or if i can Omit That INGREDIENT. Thanks for yoUr tiMe. Pamela. VANCOUVER island, bc
Ally says
Absolutely! Just omit the cocoa powder - it's only there for colour!
