Okay. I lied. It’s not really a milkshake. It’s more like a smoothie. But you’re here reading about it. So who’s the real winner? (Spoiler: your tastebuds)
In my defence, this chocolate cherry smoothie is wayyy too good to not be called a milkshake. It’s thick, creamy, and full of black forest flavour.
But I’m torn. This Chocolate Covered Cherry Smoothie is actually really good for you. Doesn’t that kind of exclude it from being junk food? Maybe it is a smoothie? Maybe it is just a super healthy milkshake? Jury’s out. Maybe it’s a smooshake. That’s it. I’m TM’ing that. Smooshake.
I’ve never been really crazy about cherries, until oh, last summer. Then I went cherry crazy. It’s like making up for lost time now. More cherries! STAT!
Sometimes, we’re even lucky enough to get fresh B.C. cherries here in Alberta that DON’T cost $9/lb!! Yes, I too am offended by those prices!
In the offseason, I try to make my cherry dollar stretch (mostly because they aren’t available regularly) by buying frozen cherries. This recipe features frozen cherries.
But serious. Try this smoothie or milkshake. Or whatever it is! I may or may not have had this for breakfast 4 days in a row. (I definitely did). I dare you to drink this whole smooshake and not smile after 🙂
Things you need to know about this recipe:
Hemp seeds are added to this recipe because they add a nutty flavour while packing a protein punch, helping to keep you full. Psst – don’t forget about the Omegas!
Bananas adds a little bit of sweetness, lots of potassium and fibre, creaminess and the flavour is mostly hidden.
Cherries have good levels of copper and iron – making them excellent for your blood.
USE raw cacao powder over cocoa powder if you can! Cacao is is a naturally fermented food (fist pump!) that comes with all the goodness of fermented foods, and don’t forget its antioxidant properties.

- 1 cup frozen cherries - I used dark sweet cherries
- 1 cup almond milk, or other milk
- 1 banana
- 1/8 cup hemp hearts
- 1 1/2 tbsp cacao/cocoa powder
- 3 dates, soaked in warm water for 3- 5 minutes, drained
- handful of ice
- cacao nibs & extra cherries for garnish
- Add everything to your blender. I use a Vitamix, and it works awesome!!
- Transfer to your favourite cup.
- Garnish with cacao nibs and extra frozen cherries.
