Kate and her man picked up a juicer on Boxing Day of last year, and to say I’ve been incredibly jealous would be an understatement. I have been pining for one for months – because like Kevin says, I’m the appliance queen. I LOVE to have specialty appliances – I love playing with and experimenting with them. I just love being in the kitchen, it’s my zen space.
As much as I wanted a juicer, I kind of pushed the thought out of my mind – as they are pricey, I truly don’t have room for any more appliances in our kitchen, and I wasn’t sure if we’d use it enough to justify the cost.
Then we got the internet at home. Yes. You read that right, Kevin and I have been living without internet for 8 years. We do know that it’s 2015 and that everyone has the internet, but for some reason, due to our rural location we have been unable to get internet. Well, this has changed! And I’ve been ringing in the newfound connectivity with massive Netflix binge watching. That’s pretty much where I’ve been for the last 2 months :/
Anyways, I digress. I watched a documentary on Netflix called Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead. During this show, the host shared the positive attributes of juice and juicing fresh produce. My insatiable desire to have a juicer returned.
So I started to research. A lot.
I looked at low price options, you know, in case we hated it. I looked at high price options, you know, because I have excellent taste (ha). I looked at centrifugal juicers, because that’s what Joe used in the movie. I looked at slow masticating juicers, because of the knowledge I had from Kate.
In the end, I settled on this Kuvings Whole Slow Juicer. Why? Because high speed centrifugal juicers rotate at a very high RPM, high speed increases heat which affects the living enzymes in your juice, as well as increases oxidation which also affects the nutrient value of the foods. Slow masticating juicers rotate at between 60 and 80 RPM and because of that, maintain more of the vital enzymes and nutrients. Slow masticating juicers are also able to juice leafy greens and soft produce better than their centrifugal competition, they also produce more juice and less wet pulp. Another bonus to masticating juicers, the juice made will often last much longer. Centrifugal juice should be consumed within 15 minutes of making it, while slow masticated juice can be refrigerated for up to 72 hours! The last thing that attracted me to the Kuvings juicer was the larger feed chute and upright design. I was not able to find much information on vertical vs horizontal juicers, but the upright design meant this juicer has a smaller, albeit taller, footprint and I was able to sneak it under my cupboard without displacing anything else.
This juicer was my Mother’s Day gift and I must say, it’s been incredible for the entire family. No we haven’t beaten cancer because of it, but I do feel as though we are much healthier thanks to it. We no longer buy juice in the store and I don’t cringe when the kids ask for it, because I know what’s in it. I know it was made by me, with love, and it’s got tons of phyto-chemicals, nutrients, and enzymes that will only help nourish their bodies. We’ve had it for nearly 2 months and have been using it extensively for juices and nut milks. Did I mention that this unit also comes with a 10 year warranty?
I am actually very surprised to announce that Kevin uses the juicer more than I do. He loves grapefruit juice, so we’ve been buying grapefruits by the 5lb bag and he’s been juicing them constantly! FYI, it’s much cheaper to buy a bag of grapefruits and juice them than it is to continually buy the small personal sized Dole Grapefruit Juice that he loved so much, and we get more juice out of it!
I would absolutely recommend this juicer to anyone. The unit itself fits underneath our standard height cupboards, and is incredibly simple to assemble, disassemble and clean. It’s sturdy, quiet and powerful. This unit has never jammed on us, no matter what we’ve put through it. And we’ve tried almost everything!
This in no way is a paid or sponsored post. This juicer was bought with my money and I am not sponsored by Kuvings in any way, these are my opinions and thoughts on a personally purchased product. There are affiliate links in this post, which I do appreciate the use of, as the small amount made helps to offset the costs associated with running an ad free blog. Thank you <3
