Winter is definitely here in Northern Alberta, and She’s brought with her the bone chilling cold and wind chill values that make you never want to leave the house. While not directly related to the temperature, it’s cold and flu season, and I find that my kids have been more susceptible to coughs, colds and flus around this time. September, when school gets back in, and again in January when school is back in session after Christmas holidays.
In 2014, Aedyn was in Pre-K from March onwards, and Zenen didn’t go to school at all. Regardless, it was their second winter/spring in daycare part time and they were sick constantly. Germs from the other kids who went to school, or had older siblings in school, or just germs, germs, and more germs! I’m not sure, but I felt like we battled one illness or another all winter long.
Last winter was also the same year my poor little guy had gotten pneumonia for the 2nd and 3rd time in less than a year. He was wasn’t even 2 years old. And this mommy was DONE! Finished. Over it. Tired of my beautiful and otherwise healthy child being so sick. Tired of watching him have x-rays done while strapped into the pigg-o-stat torture device. Tired of being up nights worrying about him. Tired of watching him struggle through being so ill. Tired of the doctors just prescribing extremely high doses of antibiotics and hoping that would help.
I came home from the hospital after they told me that Zenen had pneumonia for the 3rd time shaken to the core. I was scared. I was tired. I was sad. I was looking at the laundry list of meds he had to take. I was thinking about the upcoming appointment with a paediatrician, and I was crying in Kevin’s arms. We had a long heart to heart about what we wanted for our kids and how we hoped to achieve it. That night we signed up for Young Living. That’s when our health changed for the better, practically overnight.
Ask me about this winter! Please! Ask me if my kids have been sick with Aedyn in school 3 days a week? Ask me if they’ve been sick being in daycare full time since September? Ask me if we’ve had any pneumonia? Ask me! Please!
The answers are NO! No! and A resounding no!
We haven’t had any sort of pneumonia since the 3rd and hopefully last time! We haven’t had anything beyond a light cough and a couple day fever for each child since September. I know. It’s almost unbelievable, but it’s the 100% truth.
Kevin actually brought it up the other day and said “You know, babe, we haven’t had any of the sickies this winter, have we?” He wasn’t wrong. I hadn’t even realized it. We ended up talking for a long while and trying to figure out exactly what was different. More days at daycare? Probably not helpful. Relatively clean diet? Most likely helpful. Oils? Hey. We were on to something here.
What have I done differently in the past 4 months that I wasn’t doing before? OILING! And regularly. The oils have been my secret weapon. And I’m about to share with you my secret recipe!
- 10 drops Thieves
- 10 drops Oregano
- Young Living V-6 Oil or Fractionated Coconut Oil
- In a ⅓-1/2oz roller ball bottle, Add 10 drops of Thieves and 10 drops of Oregano.
- Carefully fill the remainder with V-6 oil or fractionated coconut oil - both work!
- Store in a cool dark place!
Please, please, be very cautious of your essential oils and their source. There are many essential oil companies out there, and they don’t all play nice in the sandbox. Oils that are adulterated are NOT safe to use internally, or even topically – because don’t forget, your skin is your largest organ. This article does an excellent job explaining some of the science behind the essential oils and why she, as a chemist chooses Young Living products exclusively. It is a very informative article and I encourage you to read it.
