I was home with my kids the other day and after we had had breakfast and cleaned up the mess, well, after I cleaned up the mess and they played, they were suddenly hungry again. Apparently a stack of pancakes topped with real maple syrup, plus assorted fruit wasn’t enough for them! After this converstation:
Kids: “I’m still hungry”
Me: “what do you feel like eating?”
Kids””I don’t know, you tell me”
I decided to make a smoothie.
I love smoothies. They are nutritious, tasty, filling and easy! This one has no only all the nutritional value of the fruits added, but the healthy fats from the almonds, as well as the bonus of chia seeds and hemp hearts.
Why chia? I started adding chia to my diet a year or so ago, and I conciously try to sneak in a tablespoon of the healthy little seeds daily. They pack a nutrient punch, calorie for calorie they are incredibly nutrient dense. They are full of antioxidants, high in protein, very high in omega 3s, and even fibre. They also add help me to achieve a the thick consistency I love so much. I mean, I had to go buy special milkshake straws because I like my smoothies soooo thick! These are the Chia seeds I’ve been using.
Hemp hearts. If you’re not familiar with them, it’s time we sit down and discuss! These mighty little hearts pack 10g of Omegas and 10g of protein per 3 tbsp! In that same 3 tbsp, I get 20% of my daily recommended intake or iron plus 3g of fibre. The hemp hearts also add a mild nutty flavour and smoothness to my smoothies that I really love. I can tell when I’ve forgotten them. These are the Hemp Hearts I’ve been using, from Manitoba Harvest. love love love.
It was kind of a chilly day, so we settled on a tropical flavour, because the kids weren’t wearing pants and I felt like imagining I was on a beach!
Note: I used a fresh banana and pineapple, the rest of the fruit in my smoothie was frozen. If you use more frozen fruit, you may need to add more almond milk, and likewise, less almond milk if using all fresh fruit.
- 1 banana
- 1 cup frozen mango chunks
- 1 cup frozen sliced peaches
- 1 cup frozen pineapple chunks
- 1 cup almond milk
- ¼ cup almonds,
- 2 tbsp chia seeds
- 3 tbsp hemp seeds
- dash of cinnamon
- Add all ingredients to high speed blender, like the Vitamix, and blend until smooth and uniform!
